The Almuñécar Town Hall has suddenly remembered that you exist and are reminding foreign residents that they have to register.

ALM Register to Vote Municipal ElectionsThere are almost 7,000 foreign residents within the municipality, which is why the Town Hall has launched a campaign to encourage them to take part in the municipal elections, which are held next year.

You might have guessed that the local elections are near because all across Spain Town Halls have started frenzied public works all over the place, to show everybody just how busy they are, improving the life of their voters.

Now, that might just sound a little cynical, which is not our intent; we wanted it to sound very cynical but we digress…

Right, how does it work? Firstly, you’ll  have to get your skates on because the deadline looms. And don’t think that just because you are on the Patrón, you are already registered to vote; it’s a separate thing.

You can register on the Censo Electoral  for the Elecciones Municpales on the 28th of May 2023. All those foreign residents that are from countries of member states of the European Union, or from other countries that have bilateral agreements, allowing their citizens to be eligible to vote here.

The non-EU countries that have bilateral agreements with Spain are: Bolivia, Cabo Verde, Chile, Colombia, South Korea, Ecuador, Iceland, Norway, New Zealand, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad y Tobago and… the United Kingdom, which is anything but united.

So, how do you get your name on the electoral register? You can do it online via the Sede Electrónica del Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE) using the cl@ve system.

Or you can physically go around to the Town Hall building, or if you are a resident of La Herradura, at the Centro Cívico..

And, we finish with, you have until the 30th of January, 2023, but remember, this does not only concern Almuñécar/La Herradura, but any town within Spain where you might be living.

My wife and I just received, voting, registration documents in the post.
These can be completed and returned by post, but also contain instructions for registering online, including a code for anyone who doesn’t have an online certificate (clave).
    Surprisingly well organised!
