Water for La Herradura

Farmers of irrigated land will have their irrigation systems modernised, thanks to a grant of 3,000,000 euros, fruit of an accord with administrations.

The Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación, through a publicly owned company, Sociedad Mercantil Estatal de Infraestructuras Agrarias SEIASA, signed a deal with the Comunidad de Regantes Jóvenes Agricultores, in order to approve this grant, which came from EU funding.

The recycled water will come from the sewage treatment plant (EDAR) and will be used on the 856 hectares belonging to the 747 members of the Comunidad de Jóvenes Agricultores, as well as the La Marina 1, San José and Río Jate ones.

The new system will require a new pumping station and a pipeline, which will connect the output collection pond with a water reservoir at the Cabecera del Río Jate. This will mean a substantial improvement to the water supply for irrigation during the summer.

The new system, with its soil-monitoring sensors, will be automated and controlled via Internet.

Eighty-percent of the funding will come from the EU via the Central Government and the remaining 20% will be covered by the irrigation associations.

The project was put forward by the Junta de Andalucía for consideration before the Central Government and as the money comes from EU recuperation funds, work must be completed by 2026.
