Last month we spoke of how a village school had set up a futuristic classroom and this month its about a new gym for the Colegio Público Las Gaviotas.
Thanks to funds from the EU (FEDER) via the Junta de Andalucia, the school will have a new extension built to house a gymnasium, thanks to 400,000 euros.
The construction company Maracof S.L. started at the beginning of last month; i.e., almost at the beginning of the school year.
The Mayor, Juan José Ruiz Joya popped in to watch work begin and get himself in a photo, naturally, accompanied by the First Councillor for La Herradura, Daniel Barbero and a representative of the parents’ association, AMPA.
Last year the school, which has almost 300 pupils spread between the Infant and Junior school classes, had a lift installed in the Junior School building and the pupil’s bathrooms had a make over.
The new gym, which will be located behind the Junior School building, will have its own changing rooms and toilets. It will have a minimum area of 240 sq/m and a large covered area (225 sq/m) attached to it for when it rains, so that sports activities can still go ahead.
As the Colegio Las Gaviotas doesn’t have a school hall for plays and end-of-term parties, parents have to arrange them to be held elsewhere, such as in the Centro Cívico. For this reason the gym will have an area where a temporary stage can be set up
