For the 5th year running, around the end of July, Salobreña is visited by streaks of scum in the sea close to the beaches.

We reported about a week ago an orange scum on the water, but this ‘visitation’ was cause by micro-algae, but this time it’s green and it’s right across the Costa Tropical and not just Salobreña.

The unwelcome summer visitor was first spotted yesterday afternoon on Playa de La Guardia in Salobreña – a reader, Vicky Orellana, wrote in to tell us. However, it was soon seen in Almuñécar to the west and Motril and Torrenueva Costa to the east.

No, this surfing sea snot is actually another, perfectly natural, biological manifestation of micro-organisms related to algae, according the Almuñécar Councillor for Beaches, Daniel Barbero.
