New Almuñécar Mayor?

A couple of days ago the Nº2 in the PP explained that the Mayor Trinidad Herrera might be promoted to regional government, leaving him as Mayor.

ALM Plenary MY22 400x250Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way because the PP was not the most voted-for party in the last Almuñécar elections; the CA headed by Juan Carlos Benavides was.

This means that the next mayor has to obtain the majority vote in a Plenary Meeting of the Town Council to be sworn in; 11 councillors in favour of the full 21 seats.

Mayor Herrera squeezed through because the diametriacally opposted (politically speaking) IU/Podemos voted in her favour with their single seat vote. They do not form part of the ruling coalition.

Councillor Benavides was quick to point this out, because, if nobody obtains 11 votes in favour, he as the head of the most-voted party takes the mayoralty.

“If the Podemos Councillor does not vote again in favour of the Partido Popular, then the majority that put Herrera in the Mayor’s office is broken, making way for a progressive administration,” read a CA communiqué.
