The Road Victim was A Priest

The 56-year-old man, who died when he left his car on the A-44 because he felt sick, was a local priest.

GRA Felipe Javier Molina NúñezFather Felipe Javier Molina Núñez was the priest for Albuñuelas and Saleres, as well as the chaplan at Hospital Santa Ana in Motril, according to the Archidiócesis de Granada.

He was also the parish priest for Arenas del Rey for eight years, which included nearby Fornes and Jayena.

Father Felipe was on his way to officiate a Sunday service when he felt ill at the wheel and pulled over onto the hard shoulder, got out and collapsed onto the tarmac.

Neither the Guardia Civil officers who were first on the scene nor the paramedics in the ambulance could do anything for him.

The Archbishop of Granada spoke at the funeral, which was held on Monday the 25th at 11.30h at the Santa María Micaela church in La Chana in Granada.

Since his ordination in June 1991, he has served in Murchas, Albuñol, Motril, Riofrío and Ízbor. He became the hospital Chaplain in 2016.

Editorial comment: the first press release said that he had been killed on the road, not that he had suddenly died; in other words he was not run or knocked over but suffered a natural death apparently.
