The residents of Calle Joaquina Eguaras Nº19 are not impressed with the country’s legal system because it has evidently failed them.
A thief who had raided their storage rooms in the communal garage a number of times and was eventually arrested (far from his first arrest) were relieved when he was remanded in custody in the provincial jail in December, after being caught red handed.
He was caught because a group of block residents had surrounded him, even though he was armed with a knife, and kept him there unil the police arrived.
But their relief was short lived because in January, he was released and has returned to pillage their underground parking area… with seeming impunity.
In fact, the police arrested him again early last month – but not for long, of course…
“We completely fed up with this individual and his mates because when it’s not him, it’s one of them, so we have no idea what do about it,” said one said the block Chairwoman, adding, “the police are doing a great job because each time we phone, they come immediately, doing all they can, but it is to no use at all see if the Public Prosecuto of judge don’t keep them locked up.”
She pointed out that her neighbours are scared because when they go down to the garage, they have no idea what to expect and that in the space of just week there were to break-ins. “They force the lock on the main garage door and run off with their arms full,” she lamented.
One of the ‘nasties’ is a 41-year old with more detentions his charge sheet than the Red Baron had ‘kills’ painted on his tailplane. Completely unphased by yet another arrest he took no precautions against leaving finger prints – he might as well have left a business card.
So, what are the residents doing about it? They’re putting up posters all over the block and lampposts and trees with prints of CCTV images of this individual. It’s not much but it is at least better than folding their arms and waiting for the next break-in.
They are also calling for a little more “comprehension from judges and public prosecutors and for them to clamp down on the culprits.
