Hill Fire Near El Cerval

There was little news about the fire above La Herradura on Friday night into Saturday, which was finally declared "extinguished at 13.30h by Infoca.

LHR El Cerval fire FB22The mainstream media has still not reported on it; i.e., Ideal and the only direct news was from the Twitter accounts of the Almuñécar fire service and the regional forest-fire service, Infoca.

One reader reports that the fire had a strange form as it was rectangular but hollow in the middle; i.e., the flames were around the sides of the triangle.

During the night and the early morning both the Almuñécar fire service and Infoca had personnel and vehicles (between seven and nine, according to the source) on the ground near the hamlet of El Cerval (where the local-wine competition is held) according to Infoca. The Almuñécar fire service, on the other hand, more accurately described the area of the fire as El Cerro Albita, which is also the location that our reader described.

Editorial comment: we spoke with the person on duty this morning at the Almuñécar fire station to confirm details. The source said that they had received the call out around two in the morning on Saturday. We also asked about the extention of the area affected on the Cerro Albaita and were told that Infoca, which handles this information, has not yet made it known.

Assuming neighbouring municipalities pull together for the greater good surely it makes good environmental and economic sense to fund the suggested fire watchtowers , a la US National Parks, during the vulnerable times of the year which could well be all 12 months at this rate

on the morning of this night time incident my wife and i noted smoke in that area and remarked it was going to be warm and dry day with danger afoot. today there are similar weather conditions and already we have had smoke from two different fires in that direction.

perhaps a required education program for all farm workers spelling out clear rules and requirements. another proactive move in these tinderbox times is a fire watch station in both almunecar and la herradura….this might be better than sitting blind in the station waiting for a call out.

Paul: Thanks. There is no information about how much land was consumed nor about the possible cause, but it is doubtful that somebody was burning orchard cuttings at that time of night. It is possible that if it was caused by this kind of fire, then somebody must have left it without making sure it was completely out and it revived. We shall see.

During the lockdown lasting from mid March 2020 until June around the 20th, I had my fire-making permission withdrawn along with everybody else because the fire service was busy disinfecting streets, etc and could not attend to a call out. So what I had to do was pile it up and lash it down to await the following fire-burning season. So, why the hell can’t farmers to the same thing whilst this drought persists?

good job martin….glad no one was hurt. we are becoming more and more like southern california with our frequent hillside fires especially in this extreme drought. avocado monculture is contributing to habit and climate change as well ruining the the beauty of our area
