We’re talking about 28,000 tonnes of the stuff that presented quite a logistical task to deliver it to the factory, which is near Lobres, on the banks of the Río Guadalfeo.
It took literally over a thousand trips using a fleet of road tankers.
The molasses are used to make alcohol for the rum factory, Ron Montero, in Motril, as well as being sold abroad.
However, during 2020 the alcohol distilled at the Azucarera del Guadalfeo was used to cover the shortage of surgical alcohol caused by the demand of hand gels.
The distillery consumes around 125,000 tonnes of molasses a year that come from sugarcane and sugar beet, the former from India, Algeria, Morocco and Pakistan whilst the latter comes from Russia.
The distillery works 24/7 and can produce around 80,000 litres of pure alcohol a day.
