Butano Goes Up Today

Today the price of a butane bottle will go up by 4.91% and will now cost 17.75 euros. The new price was published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado yesterday.

SPN Butano 400x250The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in containers between eight and 20kg is regulated by the Government and revised every two months on the 3rd Tuesday of the second month.

By law, the price cannot fluctuate by more than five percent either way; hence the increase of 4.91%.

The Government based the new price on three factors: the price of the prime material; transport costs and the exchange rate between the Euro and the US (petro) Dollar. Transport has gone up by 35.2% and the exchange rate dropped by 2.8% against the US Dollar.

Spain consumes 68m bombonas de butano per year, of which 53 million come under the government-regulated, pricing system. However, between 2009 and 2018 the amount of LPG sold dropped by 20% owing to the economic crisis caused by the building-bubble collapse.
