Grants for Shrinking Villages

There are 72 municipalities in the province of Granada that are losing their population rapidly and they are desperate to reverse the trend

For this reason they have requested grants from the Provincial Council in order to set up services in their villages, such as a shop or a bar.

The said council has set aside 1.5m euros for towns or municipal dependencies that are lacking such fundamental amenities. The grants would permit town or village halls to finance renovating or even building a business premises to house these projects.

“We want to bring what we consider as fundamental services to the inhabitants of these tiny municipalities, fixing in place the populations in these areas and thus avoid the slow depopulation that affects many places, as well as reactivating the provincial economy,” explained the Chairman of the Provincial Council of Granada, José Entrena.

Once each municipality has submitted their request, explaining what they need and allocated municipal property (plot or building) the Council will offer technical assistance in order to draw up a project for it, making sure that it keeps within the restrictions for such businesses (bars/shops, for example).

The following are 17 of the municipalities that have submitted grants: Alamedilla, Alpujarra de la Sierra, Beas de Granada, Caniles, Cuevas del Campo, Darro, Diezma, Fornes, Gobernador, Gorafe, Guadahortuna, Los Guájares, Huétor Santillán, Morelábor, Rubite and Ventas de Huelma.
