Almuñécar Town Hall finally awarded the works contract for the renovation of Plaza de la Libertad in La Herradura and work began at the end of last month.
The idea is to have it finished by the village’s fiesta, San José on the 19th of March, which is also Father’s Day in Spain.
The square, which is situated behind the flats on the beach road, is the venue for many events in the village, such as the hand-puppet theatre for kids.
It’s been a couple of decades since it last got a bit of TLC but now it’s getting a complete make over giving it better access from the old town.
The square was originally laid down 25 years ago and hasn’t been adapted to needs of a village that has grown considerably.
“Three architects participated in the project so that the square would become a nexus between the old town and other areas like the San José church,” explained First Councillor, Juan José Ruiz Joya, adding, “we put a lot of time and work into adapting the square to the present day.”
The works have a budget of 345,000 euros and will be carried out by Vilaterra SL. Accessibility will be improved and more shade will be provided so that it will have more use in the summer.
Editorial comment: funny! No mention of the underground car park beneath it?
