Feeding pigeons in Trafalgar Square is a tourist attraction - at least it was - hordes of maurading pigeons in Motril, however, is a problem.
But it’s not only pigeons but also seagulls which make there way in from the beaches to the centre of town, kicking up a din with there squawking… it won’t be long before they start barging into queues and, carrying away lapdogs and pygmies in their beaks.
Block-community spokespersons from housing on Las Explanadas, the Plaza de la Aurora or the Plaza de España, have been nagging the Town Hall to do something about it. Something could be done about the pigeons but short of abandoning the town and moving inland there’s not much you can do about seagulls, one would think… legally that is.
Apartment dwellers with balconies find these imposing seabirds perched on the railings, defecating, squawking and making sarcastic remarks about the colour scheme of the lounge… in the warmer months when the windows are left open, some of the blighters even waddle in.
Consequently, they phone the Policía Local – the residents; not the seagulls – requesting that they come round and do something about it, which is an insanely optimistic request… Admittedly, any request for the said boys in blue to do something other than fine you will only end in tears anyway.
But the Town Hall, in order to be seen to be doing something about the problem, has contacted an array of pest-control companies for solutions and prices but nothing has come of it to date. They have said, however, that if the problem persists or increases, they will inform the relevant authority; in other words, pass the parcel within the great cobweb-collecting entrails of civil-service Procrastination Department.
On a positive note it appears that seagulls have told the pigeons to sling their hook as Motril is now their turf.
