The Spanish Air Force squadron, EVA 9, now has a square named in its honour for its 50th anniversary since it was established in Motril.
The said square is within the port area in front of the ferry/cruise ship terminal, which recently had a face lift.
Representatives of the three armed forces were present, as well as numerous civil ones, amongst them the Mayor and the Provincial Subdelegate for the Central Government.
The Chairman of the Port Authorities, José García Fuentes, said that during these past 50 years EVA-9 had forged strong links with Motril, leaving a positive, indelible impression upon the town.
The Chairman went on to sing the praise of this Air Force squadron, using a vast array of adjectives and expansive prose. In short, he said that many, many people have links to service personnel and their families and that the squadron has done a marvellous job protecting the country.
The Commanding Office of EVA 9, José Luis Rando Guirado, that the Port Authorities had made the Air Force happy bunnies over this recognition: “from today there is a little part of this unit in the docks, next to such a prominent place as the passenger terminal where people come and go from North Africa.”
Editorial comment: any levity expressed here does not detract from the good name and important task carried out by EVA-9. However, that does not go for politicians, of course, who still haven’t managed to get the jet monument restored and in place.
