A man had to be rescued by fire personnel after he stepped into a lift shaft and fell several meters down onto the roof of the lift compartment.

This accident occured around 17.30h on Friday in an apartment block on Calle Granada in El Ejido, Almería. Fortunately for him, somebody had seen him disappear and heard the thud, so they phoned the 112 emergency number.

According to the Policía Local, the lift compartment had fallen to the bottom of the well and the victim had unwittingly just stepped straight in when the doors opened – he obviously wasn’t looking and was probably texting with his phone.

The fire personnel managed to get him out of the well and into a waiting ambulance, which rushed him to the Hospital de Poniente with severe injuries.
