The Junta de Andalucia was busy clearing the upper reaches of Río Jate in La Herradura around the end of last month.
Heavy machinery and workers have been working on 1,400 metres of the riverbed, removing excess vegetation, especially wild cane, in order to remove obstacles to storm water coming down the river.
Doing this now also removes more work later if the cane etc were washed down to the river mouth, littering the beach and forming flotsam.
The company hired for this work by the Junta de Andalucía, Tragsa, concentrated the clearing-up work in the area of the upper reaches of the river, near Cortijo Barco.
“This is one of the most important tasks undertaken in the last decades, following the storm in 2007,” said the Councillor for the Environment and Agriculture, Luis Aragón.
He went on to explain that last year similar work was carried out in in Rió Seco, as well as Río Verde where it is joined by the Barranco de Bolobona.
The work not only consisted of removing the excess vegetation, but also providing an access track to reach the area, as well as clearly marking out the lateral limits of the river.
