An elderly woman had to be taken to hospital in the early hours of this morning after a fire broke out in her home.

The emergency services received a call out around 03.15h to Calle Geranio on Urbanización Monte de los Almendros in Salobreña.

The 87-year-old woman of Spanish nationality was treated for smoke poisoning at Hospital Santa Ana.

The fire appears to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, according to the Motril fire service.
