A Bigger Playa Granada

COS Summer Beachgoers JL20Motril’s beaches can fit 71,000 beachgoers at a squeeze; in other words, Motril beaches have an extension of 238,000 sq/m.

You would think that with that Motril wouldn’t have problems with overcrowding but that was exactly what happened last week when beachgoers arriving on Playa Granada were turned back by the municipal police because it was ‘full.’ This beach under present health precautions has room for 7,000 people.

So, the Town Hall has set out to remedy the problem, explained the Councillor for Tourism, José Lemos, by sending out front loaders to extend the area of the beach near Finca Astrida, thus gaining an extra 10,000 sq/m.

Now this area of the beach is not exactly well known so the beach auxiliaries will inform beachgoers as they arrive that this spot is available, when the other parts start to fill up. Yes, it might be a 3-day camel trek and a packed lunch from the golf clubhouse, but if you’ve travelled half way across the country to reach Motril to spend your holidays, what does that matter?

This, of course, brings us to parking… Owing to Costas having a PMS moment last year, concerning people parking on the side of the beach nearest the road, from whence, with the help of binoculars, you can see the wet bit on the other side, the Town Hall has provided alternative parking.

Yes, there are now 1,880 parking spaces, distributed around several parking lots, but even so there were problems last weekend, too, when it came to parking up your 4-wheeled budget guzzler. There is little that the Town Hall can do about this now, so when these parking areas fill to maximum capacity, drivers will be turned back. That is, unless Costas discovers that it has a soul…
