Every Summer the coast receives extra medical staff for the area’s medical centres, and this summer will certainly be no different.
After the hard slog of handling cases of Coronavirus these last months and the mental strain of dealing with so many deaths, doctors, nurses and hospital staff in general need a break, more than any other year, so new personnel are both needed to stand in for those on much deserved holiday and well as to provide extra staffing for the summer when coastal towns triple their populations.
In order to organise staffing during the summer, the Junta has announced that it will hire 2,850 medical personnel of all kinds for the region; that’s 10% more than last year, The Southern Health Area will receive 22 doctors.
Five of those doctors will be distributed between Calahonda, La Herradura, La Mamola, Castell de Ferro and Torrenueva Costa. There will also be another two doctors for Almuñécar and one for Salobreña. There will be another 11 doctors for the Alpujarras and Motril’s various medical centres.
Furthermore, SAS intents to extend the contracts of medical personnel who were hired to reinforce hospitals during the Lock Down and whose contracts were due to expire on the 31st of June, amongst them four doctors
Yet it is not just a case of contracts running out, but also of doctors who are retiring during July, whose places will have to be filled, amongst them a doctor in Motril who decided to postpone retirement to be available during the health crisis.
