The maritime branch of the Guardia Civil rescued a young man on a surfboard off the coast of Torrenueva yesterday.

The 19-year-old windsurfer parted company with his surfboard after the sail broke. Several windsurfing companions saw that he was having difficulty reaching the beach and raised the alarm around 14.20h.

The civil guardsmen fished him out of the water and took him to Motril Port where they are based.

Unfortunately for the rest of the windsurfers, nobody had a driver’s licence – they had come in the victim’s car – so they were stranded on the beach. The Policía Nacional, however, gave them a lift to the port.
