The Policía Nacional in Motril managed to arrest two youths, aged 17 and 18, accused of stealing mopeds and scooters around the town.
In a short space of time the municipal police had received several complaints reporting the theft of such vehicles. In each case the bike had been parked on the street with the steering-lock activated and a chain around a wheel.
Consequently, the police decided to mount special night patrols based on the modus operandi of the thieves and the normal time frame within which they operated.
The police soon managed to identify the alleged culprits and arrest them. According to the police, the two youths stole and sold the mopeds and scooters in order to fund their drug usage.
The elder suspect has several previous offences on his charge sheet for this kind of activity.
Editorial comment: They’ll both be out very soon, pending trial, and carrying on as before – that’s the problem. It must be very frustrating for the police to catch culprits like these knowing that they will be released probably before the arresting officers have finished their next shift.
