A police patrol in Almuñécar managed to save the life of a man on Wednesday night, who had been choking to death.
It was around 21.00h when a woman approached the patrol, who were on Calle Guadix, to say that her brother-in-law was choking. The police and the woman ran to the flat where this was taking place.
Upon arriving, they discovered a man of around 40 lying unconscious on the floor. They lost no time applying the Heimlich Manoeuvre.
Several minutes past without the victim expelling what was blocking his windpipe so another police officer decided to use a portable defibrillator that they carried in the patrol car.
By the time that the ambulance crew had arrived (some seven minutes) the victim had coughed up the obstruction and was breathing normally.
The man was taken to the Medical Centre for a thorough check-up owing to how long he had remained unconscious without breathing.
