Paella Dish Controversy

MOT-AvSaloThe Mayor of Motril’s decision to removed the paella-dish fountain on Avenida de Salobreña roundabout has attracted strong criticism from the opposition.

A socialist councillor, Alicia Crespo, had no kind words for the plan to substitute the fountain for a bronze shield. She pointed out that it was the present Mayor’s party which spent 4.5m euros overhauling the said thoroughfare in the first place.

She considers the work a complete waste of money and the only thing that needs to be sorted out are the architectonic barriers (previously reported in the Gazette) at the mouth of one of the streets leading up to the fountain roundabout.

She pointed out that when her party lost the mayoralty, they left a surplus of 20m euros in municipal coffers but that “instead of spending the money helping Motrileños living in the outer areas of the town, they’re throwing money away on putting right what they got wrong not very long ago.”

Editorial Comment: when the PP overhauled the Avenida de Salobreña it was very controversial as it eliminated over a hundred parking spaces, causing strident protests from shop owners along the avenue. The interminable clutter of zebra crossings make it a miracle if you can from one end of the avenue to the other without having to stop umpteen times, and that’s without mentioning the bicycle lane that nobody actually appears to use… except moped riders. We won’t go into it here how the company that got the work contracted was allegedly connected with the biggest corruption scandals to assail the PP: Gürtel.
