A bar owner was closing up when two individuals burst in armed with large knives – it was coming up to midnight and they weren’t there to sell encyclopaedias.

The bar in question was the Bar Arenal, which is in La Zubia; which in turn is a satellite town of the city of Granada. It was 23.30h last Friday night.

The two men had the waiter and the owner with knives at their throats and were about to achieve their objective when a customer decided otherwise. Perhaps it had been one of those days when your teenage daughter tells you she’s pregnant, your teenage son tells you he’s gay and your car has left you and gone to live with your mechanic. He had obviously had enough.

Armed with a no-fuss broom the customer decided to tackle the robbers. Caught completely by surprise, the hooded men panicked and ran out the bar, leaving the bar staff and super-customer both amazed and relieved. They also exited without any booty.

The man is a hero in the eyes of bar staff and other customers, and a very lucky one, say the police, who recommend that you “don’t do anything foolish” under these circumstances. However, because of his broom-handling of the villains, it would be surprising if he ever has to pay for another drink in that bar in his life…
