The City Hall of Granada has cancelled around 50 mobile contracts in the names of municipal employees in an attempt to cut costs.
The man in charge of this mission, Councillor Francisco Fuentes, uncovered that all these telephone contracts were, in some cases, in the name of people who no longer worked there, but were still being used.
In fact, of the 1,010 mobile-phone contracts that are financed by the public coffers, 43 belong to retired civil servants (functionaries). This does not mean, however, that they were all still being used by these people, but simply that the City Hall was still paying the montly bills on them. This little oversite has been costing tax payers some 5,760 euros each year.
It should be pointed out that these functionaries include municipal police officers, fire personnel and social-services workers with an obvious need of a work, mobile number; not somebody sitting in an office in the city-hall building.
