Although the distribution system for the Rules Reservoir doesn’t exist yet, every once in a while rumours begin about the water going to Almería.
This is a constant fear that double-dealing politicians are just itching to divert some of the much needed water out of the province, instead of being entirely for the Costa Tropical farmers.
So, when an Almería newspaper published an article saying: “La Junta quiere traer a Almería agua de la presa de Rules,” (the Junta wants to bring the Rules water to Almería) Costa Tropical farmers and local mayors started frothing at the mouth.
According to the newspaper article, the Regional Government intends to link the Pantano de Rules in Granada to the Pantano de Benínar in eastern Almería.
The Junta has not denied that this may be the case.
Meanwhile on the Costa Tropical alarm bells are ringing with the Motril Town Council (PSOE & PA) and the Comunidad General de Regantes del Bajo Guadalfeo spitting feathers with the latter calling for a Plenary Meeting for this Friday.
The Mayor of Motril, Flor Almón, has issued a communiqué where she categorically states that the “Costa Tropical is not going to permit that the water contained in Rules leaves the province.”
