The Guardia Civil arrested nearly a dozen people on a Motril beach after an attempted drug-cargo landing on Playa Granada.
The incident took place in the early hours of yesterday when the SIVE cameras picked up a craft heading towards the coast during the night. This triggered an air, land and sea response.
The smugglers were heading for the area of the beach in front of the hotel there, where around a dozen ‘helpers’ were waiting to unload and move the hashish.
Out of sight a Customs launch waited for the zodiac (RIB) to reach the beach before closing in to try and cut off their escape route but the RIBs helmsman spotted what was waiting for them and managed to hightale it for Morocco.
Those on the beach decided to run for it, leaving behind the petrol containers to provide the smuggling RIB with enough fuel to return, but the Guardia Civil land-based patrol caught at least ten of them.
