The Mayor of Motril, Flor Almón, had a meeting with the provincial sub-delegate for the Ministry of the Environment concerning the beaches.
While the sub-delegate, Inmaculada López, expressed her “good disposition” on the situation, the Mayor made it clear that the Motril Town Hall was not going to permit further sand transfers from one beach to another.
Nor were the Motrileños, residents of the beach areas going to, either.
“We are not going to consent to even one more bucket of sand being moved,” she said, so the provincial administration had better start thinking about where they will find the sand to replace further beach loss come the next gales.
What the Mayor wants are the groynes, therefore she insists on a meeting as soon as possible to talk about these structures and where replacement sand is going to come from.
Editorial comment: the fact is that the groynes/breakwaters installed on Torrenueva beaches have worked a treat, as has the one on Puerta del Mar in Almuñécar. Although the construction might be costly, in the long run it works out cheaper than stealing sand from one beach and trucking to another.
