The Almuñécar Andalucistas Party has been collecting signatures concerning deficiencies at the Almuñécar Medical Centre.
According to the Andalucistas, the Town Council and the Regional Health Service (SAS) signed agreement in 2004, including in which was a new health-service portfolio covering basic and specialised services, which would mean that patients would not have to travel to Motril for these treatments. However, they say, these services never materialised.
These special services included ones covering the Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Dermatology, Urology, Obstetrics and Otorhinolaryngology (ear, nose & throat).
The Andalucistas blame this on cuts to the health service made by the Regional Government, the Junta de Andalucía, which have led to a lack of doctors & nurses during most of the year, which in turn has caused unjustified delays in patients receiving medical appoints and the consequent collapse of the Accidents & Emergency Department.
At the time of the writing of this article they had managed to collect 1,500 signatures from tables set up outside the medical centre itself, as well as the municipal market.
