In Detriment of Motril Port

MOT the port OnLThe Junta has called on the Central Government not “to restrict” the development of Motril Port and to guarantee equal conditions with the Almeria and Málaga ports.

This call comes after it became known that the Central Government, yet again, intends to favour the two other ports in detriment of Motril Port.

The Junta Delegate, Sandra García, was referring to Madrid’s intention to extend grants to Almeria and Málaga for ferry operators which could draw them away from Motril; this is the second time that the conservative-controlled Central Government has done this.

The stance of Motril is that everybody should get financial support or nobody should, in order to keep a level playing field, even though Almería and Málaga are much larger ports and already enjoy the advantage that this condition gives them.

The ferry company for foot passengers operating out of Motril, ARMAS, was awarded the Bandera de Andalucía in recognition of its commitment for using Motril as its base for connecting with Melilla, Nádor and Alhucemas since June 2011.

Editorial comment: It is perhaps relevant that the cities of Almería and Málaga are conservative strongholds, whereas Motril is in socialist hands. However, even if Motril were in conservative hands, then it might well be considered ‘expendable’ for the greater good of the party’s regional presence.

Add to this dubious action that puts Granada’s port at a disadvantage, the fact that we have the lamentable situation where the province’s capital has been 700 days without a train connection, thanks to delays to the AVE high-speed train connection.

In other words both major forms of provincial communication are being negatively affected, either by the Central Government’s ineptitude in the case of railway communication or its seemingly biased judgement, in the case of maritime transport.
