With the commencement of work on Playa Poniente and Playa Granada, Vice Mayor Alicia Crespo wanted to make it very clear that they are not responsible for the late start.
She emphasized that the Central Government (PP) is responsible for the late start, right at the height of summer, purely because it didn’t bother to carry out the work during the winter or spring, she claims, which was when the Town Hall requested the beach regeneration work to be carried out.
The damage to the beaches was caused by the autumn and winter gales, so “we asked the Central Government just before Easter, but they ignored us and decided to do it now,” she complained.
Once it became clear, she said, that they were intending to start work during the summer, Motril asked them to carry out the work in a way that caused the minimum inconvenience to beach goers as possible.
“We acknowledge that the work has to be done on Playa de Poniente and on Playa Granada, where there is a considerable shelf in the sand,” she conceded, “but nobody; the Town Hall, the tourist sector and beach users, wanted it done now.”
Consequently, the Town Hall is pushing the Central Government to provide a permanent solution instead of having to carry out regeneration work each year.
Councillor Crespo explained that at the moment Playa Granada is closed for bathing for safety reasons and so that the work can be carried out a speedily as possible. Therefore there is no access to the beach on Mondays and Tuesdays, whilst Playa Poniente, some 2-kms of beach remains open.
The shifting of sand from Playa de Poniente to Playa Granada will only take place on Mondays and Tuesdays, as agreed between Costas and local businesses in a meeting last Friday.
Editorial Comment: well, it’s pretty clear that the Town Hall denies all responsibility for this administrative botch job, but one thing is for sure, whoever is responsible for this blunder should be out of a job, as they would be, if it were a private company responsible.
