A familiar face in La Herradura, Sally Parkinson, is preparing for her next African adventure, first reported in the Gazette in 2024.
She will join the Africa Rally 2026, as Team SallysWheels, solo in her Landy, The Kalahari Snail – nicknamed “Hari” alongside some 50 other ‘motley’ crews some in vintage vehicles, 4x4s and on motorbikes to begin the fourth leg of her sub-Saharan adventure.

See africarally.com, sallyswheels.com, and SallysWheels Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.
Leaving from Hartbeespoort in South Africa on 5 July the rally traverses Botswana, Zambia and Malawi into Tanzania, finishing near Zanzibar on 25 July.
Having previously driven from South Africa through Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, she’ll leave Hari in Tanzania and return early next year to loop back through Kenya, south through Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia, into Angola, Namibia, the Cape and Lesotho to Joburg. On a later trip she’ll drive Eswatini, Mozambique and the Zimbabwe Eastern Highlands.
Throughout, Sally’s aim is to raise awareness and funds for 100% locally led community and conservation projects.
They’ve had plenty of adventures to date including saving a cow, pulling vehicles out of sand – mainly ‘perfect’ Toyotas! Starter motor issues in game parks where the “hammer fix” wasn’t ideal, and they’ve navigated tough conditions through sand, floodwater, boulders, heat and rain, as well as having close encounters with wildlife and moments that tested both vehicle and driver.
Still, and stealing from Carole King, Sally describes Africa as “an everlasting vision of ever-changing views and hues of blue, gold and green – seen, felt and forever held in memory.”
More than anything, the journey is about people. She’s building strong friendships and lasting connections. So much so that her daughter, Georgia, joined her from Malawi to Johannesburg last Christmas, staying with Tanya Ritchie (One Woman One Merc), one of those connections, at their new home in Joburg.
Sally has set up two GivenGain Fundraisers: one supporting a Community School for Orphans in Ipee, western Zambia (just three years ago there was no school, and the children, many of them orphans, faced a 10 km walk to a government school, few could. The second, supporting Anti-Poaching K-9 in Zimbabwe, which trains all-female anti-poaching units and dogs for the fight against wildlife crime and empowers women through employment.
Please support these fundraisers via africarally.com, sallyswheels.com or SallysWheels Facebook page. Follow the journey on all SallysWheels SM channels.
