The Mayor of Lújar’s comments about the alleged tardiness of the Motril Fire Service during the recent fire received strong criticism from Motril.
Motril Councillor for Citizen Safety, María Ángeles Escámez, considers that the PP Mayor is trying to obtain political benefit from the catastrophe, by putting in doubt the alacrity of the “those that put their lives in danger,” for Lújar.
But her criticism was not only for the Mayor of Lújar, but also his party colleagues on a provincial and regional level, for their “irresponsibility.”
“How is it possible for somebody to try and obtain political benefit from this drama, when there are people who have lost everything,” she asked.
She went on to say, “The Motril Fire Service and the fire services of many nearby towns fought the flames for hours on end – something that we should be praising,” adding, “They stopped things getting worse, together with Infoca and the UME (<em>Unidad Militar de Emergencia).”
“They didn’t even take five minutes to set off for Lújar, just as soon as they received the call out at 10.30h,” she said, pointing out that “from the moment they arrived 25 Motril firemen fought the fire in such hotspots as Lújar, Rubite and Gualchos.”
She ended by reminding the Mayor of Lújar that the Motril firefighters, as well as those from other contingents, “are heroes who defended with everything they had those municipalities that needed their help.”
“We believe in solidarity with our neighbours and don’t expect this kind of disloyalty from them in return.”
