Requiem for a Forest

ECO Lujar before  OnLThe fire is out and locals have been allowed to return to their homes but the devastation is heartbreaking. Here’s a photo of what the road to Lújar used to look like.

Around 80% of the 37 sq/km belonging to the municipality of Lújar has been smitten by the flames, including the 500-year-old, cork-oak forest.

No lives were lost and the village itself was spared, but its livelihood and hopes of attracting tourists to enjoy its beautiful and serene landscape have been incinerated.

Although it has not been definitively confirmed, the theory that the fire was caused by sparks from an electricity cable appears to be the most likely.

…and the summer has only just begun.
