Reports are coming in about a fire that broke out just after 5pm today in Motril Port on the Azucena Docks. It appears a large pile of Biomass (possibly lumber residue) somehow ignited and burned out of control until the arrival of the Fire Service. At Midnight last night the fire continued to burn, although under control.
There was a great deal of concern owing to the proximity of the fuel-storage tanks, although thankfully, they were not affected.
However, some of the sparks produced when the fire was at its height set fire to nearby wild sugarcane. An infoca unit which was on its way to the port fire was diverted to tackle this secondary fire.
In fact, there were two other small fires broke out, one between the river mouth and the border with Salobreña and the other near the Rambla de los Álamos, near the Spanish Air Force base, EA9. Just one fire truck was dispatched to tackle this extra fire, as all the other units were already engaged.
Besides the fire services from Motril and Almuñécar and the Infoca unit taking part, there was also a small detachment from Iznalloz, whilst the Nerja fire service was put on standby.
