Motril’s Plastic-Farming Sector to Expand

MOT plastic farming meeting OnLThe Mayor of Motril and a representative of the Junta had a meeting to discuss enlarging the permitted area for plastic greenhouse farming in the municipality.

The Junta has agreed to study the Town Hall’s plan, which would need an alteration to the PGOU (Municipal Urban Development Plan). The Council has pointed out that there is a scarcity of land for greenhouse farming, meaning what land there is has become overpriced, effectively putting it out of reach of prospective farmers, either by buying it outright or leasing it.

So, the idea is to increase the available land, bring down the prices and thus open up the sector.

The Town Hall has proposed a total of 666 hectares of land for this end but the Junta Delegate said that up to 1,700 hectares could be included, if it all complies with Environment considerations and other legal restrictions.

The Mayor, Luisa García Chamorro, said that they would be putting the earmarked land before the next Municipal Board for Culture meeting, which is scheduled for the 20th of January at 19.00h, and that the proposal to modify the PGOU accordingly would be put forward at the next Plenary Meeting of the Town Council in February.

“Nowadays Motril’s economic engine is agriculture and it’s the sector that produces most jobs, which is why the Junta and the Town Council should work together to guarantee this economic support for so many families in Motril,” explained the Mayor.
