Every year somebody complains about the presence of camper vans on the beaches or seafronts – this summer is no different.
The main area of discontent appears to be La Herradura, according to the opposition party, the PA (Benavides). The PA claims that these camper vans are parking on La Herradura beach, despite the existence of bylaws that prohibit it, with the “knowledge and consent,” of the Councillor for Citizen Safety (Municipal Police), Juan José Ruiz Joya.
In most cases they do not respect the notice boards that indicate that parking on the beach is illegal, claims the PA press release.
“They roll up, park, open their doors, unload their table and chairs and set them up, and wind out the awnings, setting up a virtual chiringuito,” reads the press release.
Well, let’s see how the said councillor responds to this accusation and complaint.

Whereas you shouldn’t be able to park on a beach, which I think just about everybody agrees with, there always seems to be a sort of hostility towards camper vans, which isn’t justified.
These winter visitors should be encouraged instead of shunned.
There is a mistaken belief that they add nothing to the economy, which is untrue: they don’t hold up in their vehicles and never set foot outside; they shop from local supermarkets, they eat at local restaurants and breakfast at local bars, and they sure as hell go to local bars in the evenings.
Sometimes the opposition to motor homes/camper vans seems almost a kind of jealousy.
