San Antón Fiestas in Lobres

Lobres will celebrate its patron saint’s festival, San Anton, on the 13th, 14th and 15th of this month.

The 13th at 19.00h will see a religious service (Misa) as the first item on the fiesta programme, ending with a parade. (pasacalles).

But the evening is only just beginning so you can expect a firework display and a knees up at the merciless hands of the Harmony dance band. Finally, the Miss and Mr Fiestas will be proclaimed.

Having survived that, the 14th kicks off with a kiddies’ football match, followed by the Fería del Día, which is basically temporary bars pumping out drinks and food. The F.d.D. will be held in the Casa de la Cultura.

Entertainment for the kids continues in the afternoon with games and a mini-disco before the grown ups have their solemn procession followed by another knees up (verbena), this time with the music provided by the dance band, Premium (no doubt the band from the previous nights will have been dismembered and their tuneless remains hidden somewhere suitable.

And then it’s Sunday the 15th, and as everybody will be nursing hangovers, there will be a barrage of early morning distress rockets, for no other particular reason, it seems, other than it is intensely annoying… but not as annoying as the dance bands… Meow!

Sunday continues with a flamenco afternoon provided by the Escuela de Baile and lots of stamping, flamenco howling, excruciating facial expressions conveying a deep knowledge of life’s tribulations, and synchronized clapping as only the Andalusians can carry off convincingly.

The whole fiesta ends with a midnight fireworks display, when remaining foreigners are untied and allowed to clap in desynchronized cacophony… Amen and goodnight.
