Motril’s Romance with Cruise Ships

MOT Nieuw-Amsterdam OnLEverybody from the Mayor down to the smallest bar owner knows that the visiting cruise ships are a blessing for the local economy.

From just one ship alone, 1,600 tourists stepped off to visit the town. Admittedly, that was the largest such ship ever to visit the port (Nieuw Amsterdam), but it certainly won’t be the last.

The business women’s association, EMAS, even laid on a mini fair to welcome them in the square where the tourist information office stands, complete with entertainment and stands sporting local products.

Back to the huge cruise ship, , which docked at 08.00h on Easter Thursday, showing of its length, which is equivalent to three football fields, and a 14-storey building in height. Of the 2,100 passengers on board, 500 opted to visit the Alhambra whilst the 1,600 decided that Motril was worth a visit.
