Appeal to Salobreña Dog Owners

Salobrena relies heavily on the tourist trade and with the old town offering many delightful sites to see; the narrow streets, whitewashed houses, the castle and Paseo de las Flores, so it is little wonder that thousands of tourists flock to our town.

However this could be at some risk if dog owners do not take more responsibility, or the Ayuntamiento does not find a way of dealing with the increasing amount of dog mess that is spoiling the streets and walkways.

An increasing number of dog owners are being irresponsible by allowing their dogs to roam free, unattended, and therefore free to drop their disgusting deposits everywhere.

Increasingly, we hear of tourists in the old town complaining about the dog mess and what a shame it is in such a beautiful town. Cars running over the mess make matters worse and there it remains until the next rains. The street cleaners do a good job but why should they have to do what dog owners should be doing; i.e., picking it up!

What is the answer?

The councillors responsible for the streets and parks and the Head of Tourism should take a walk around to see for themselves the problem.

Broadcasts via Radio Salobrena may help, telling listeners it is not acceptable to have our streets fouled by dogs, and also of the potential health hazards that dog feces bring… and maybe a more robust attitude from the law!

The notices that the Ayuntamiento put up a couple of years ago have had no effect and it would be interesting to hear if anyone has been fined by the police for not picking it up. Doubtful.

The department responsible for the streets at the Ayuntamiento has been made aware of the problem but as yet no response has been made.

Please, dog owners, do the decent thing and pick up your dog mess and help to make our town a much better place.
