There is a time to prune and a time when not to, and the basic guideline is do it whilst the plant is seasonally dormant. Hence the latest political squabble in Almuñécar.
The chief opposition party, the CA, has heavily criticized the ruling party, the PP, for carrying out major pruning operations in the Parque Blas Infante (where the Friday market is held). The Town Hall, according to the CA, has been busily cutting back the ficus and palm trees there, right in the middle of June.
Not only is the CA incensed over the damage that could be caused to the trees, but it also points out that the beetles that are decimating palm trees on the coast are in top gear at this time of year and this pruning operation will only serve to spread the plague further.
It will be interesting to hear what the Mayor, Trindidad Herrera, has to say.
