Despite it hardly being a close kept secret, not many people know that this small town above Motril has a Nazarí garden, second only to the Alhambra’s Generalife Gardens.
Unfortunately, it has been closed for a while for some repair work – work that has not materialized because of the crisis up till now. However, things are beginning to move. Work will commence soon on the entrance gate and the building within, which belongs to the epoch.
Thanks to an injection of 200,000 euros the building will be converted into offices and a hall for exhibitions.
Another bonus will be that the gardens will figure on the Thursday, National Lottery Tickets from the 22nd of August this year.
So, despite its small size, Vélez Benaudalla has three monuments: the church, the tower or keep and the Nazarí Gardens – it’s well worth a trip up there.
