Officers from the Policía Nacional have arrested a 44-year-old man in connection with the burglary carried out on a solidarity food bank in Motril.
The suspect allegedly stole 265 kilos of perishable food (milk, rice and dried vegetables, for example) and a computer amongst other electronic equipment. Evidently, such a quantity of food was not for his own consumption. The Canal Sur, regional-TV report put the figure at 500 kilos.
The accused was arrested within 24 hours of the burglary, which took place on the night of Thursday the 20th with the thieves (more than one person is thought to have taken part) forced apart the bars on one of the windows.
This was not the first burglary that the installations have suffered, as there have been a total of three break-ins since the food bank was situated in the Ventillas area. The Banco de Alimentos in Motril has been operating, however, since the year 2000 and also has a warehouse in Salobreña, in co-operation with the Town Hall of that town.
Blue Solidarity
The Policía Nacional have not only been busy apprehending criminals that target the food-bank installations, but have also been collecting and donating food themselves, as part of Kilos de Solidaridad Azul.
Within four days of beginning their particular campaign, they had collected 400 kilos from amongst their own numbers, with all the force participating, from the policeman on the beat to the clerks in the headquarters.
The food was loaded and transported in a police van and delivered to the Asociación Benéfica Jesús Abandonado, for its later distribution amongst the town’s needy.
