Herradura Wooden Paseo to Go

La plaza de Las Palmeras in La Herradura, or as it is better known, the wooden paseo, could be seeing its last days of existence, if Costas approves a request from the Town Hall.

The First Councillor for the village Juan José Ruiz Joya, with the support of the Asociación de Chiringuitos, requested for it to be taken down and the wooden beams to be used elsewhere as the first steps to improving the La Herradura beach front.

Readers that have lived here for a while will remember that the wooden paseo and pier was erected in the 90’s and although ‘unique,’ did seem oddly out of place for the Mediterranean coastline.

Sitting where it does, it is the first thing that greets visitors as they drive down to the beach from the main junction. The surface is full of dangerous gaps that easily trip up the unsuspecting – and as for accessibility for people with mobility problems, only Fred Astaire on crutches would attempt to cross it. Beneath is a haven for rodents, cockroaches and rubbish, as it is impossible for cleaning workers to get under there.

Where these treated (and toxic), wooden beams will end up – they were originally railway sleepers – is anybody’s guess, but the space left will probably end up as a sand-covered square with palm trees.
