Both Almuñécar and Motril have reduced their outlay for Christmas decorations, whilst Salobreña has done away with them completely.
The Almuñécar Councillor for Fiestas, María del Mar Medina, announced that they were reducing the lighting display by half, compared to last year’s; the budget is just under 30,000 euros. Most of the Christmas lights and decorations are concentrated in the commercial centre of the town, in support of local businesses, the councillor explained.
Last year, readers might recall, Almuñécar enlisted help from the City of Málaga, borrowing for the occasion lighting arrangements that were not going to be used there. This year, the Town Hall is trying to come up with their own homemade decorations, the star attraction of which is the nativity scene, erected in the Town Hall Square
The lights, which are being put up at the moment, will be lit on Friday the 14th at 20.00h
As for La Herradura, they will be concentrated along the route for the Rosario de la Aurora; i.e., calles: Canalejas, Real, Acera del Pilar and Príncipe, and then from Calle Canalejas, as far as the San José Church. The Paseo next to the municipal Market will get a splash of Crimbo lighting, too.
Motril is using a budget far short of last years’ – 120,000 euros less, to be exact, yet they will be putting lighting along the same streets as Christmas 2011. How? By erecting fewer light arches.
The company charged with this task again is Ximénez. The Vice-Mayor and Councillor for Fiestas, Alfredo Ortega Tovar, announced that a total of 60 streets throughout Motril and its outlaying municipal dependencies. To do this, the Town Hall has put aside 75,000 euros
Ximénez will erect 229 lighting arches, 58 of which will be in the outlaying hamlets; that represents 21% fewer than last year.
Motril’s lights were turned on on the 7th and will continue to glow until the 19th, from 18.00h to midnight and then from then until the 6th of January from 18.00h until one in the morning. On the big nights of the 24th, 31st and 5th they will blaze on until 03.00h.
