The Nerja Town Hall is going to request that the Consejería de Comercio y Turismo de la Junta de Andalucía (regional trade and tourism board) lifts a fine levied upon several businesses in the town for holding the Feria de Oportunidades de Nerja.
The Town Hall does not only believe that the trade fair did not break Andalusian trading regulations, but that it also was beneficial to local businesses precisely when businesses need a helping hand.
It was only recently that the Asociación de Empresarios de Nerja and the Centro Comercial Abierto de Nerja (Nerja Centro) had announced that the regional authorities had begun a fining process against the trade fair, which was held in February, and which was the first of its kind in Nerja. The Town Hall had collaborated with the event.
Councillor Nieves Atencia pointed out that such a trade fair has already been held in Torrox, Torre del Mar and Almuñécar, as well as many other Andalusian towns, without incurring the wrath of the CC&T.
She said that 30 establishments had participated around town, using their normal business premises, none of which exceeded 300 sq/m in size, which pretty much shoots down the CC&T’s prime reason for levying the 3,000-euro fine.
Lastly, she pointed out that the provincial office of this regional body had submitted a favourable internal report, supporting the idea.
