Two-Hundred Kilos of Junk

Well, thanks to a lot of work, co-ordination and bubble blowing, the great seabed cleaning up operation off Punta de la Mona retrieved over 200 kilos of discarded rubbish, amongst which was a traffic sign, a large lorry tyre, plastic bins, pipes, mirrors and a bucket load of fishing hooks – there was even a part of an electricity generator.

Over 50 divers from local diving schools in Almuñécar and La Herradura participated, as well as divers from the Málaga-based, Asociación Universitaria de Actividades Subacuáticas

The operation began first thing Saturday morning (9th of June) and bubbled along until 14.00h, beginning on the La Herradura side and working its way around to the Marina del Este.

After the cleaning up operation, the divers and organisers joined the II Festival, Mares de Posidonia, which is being held in Almuñécar as part of the Proyecto Life+ ‘Conservación de las Praderas de Posidonia Oceánica en el Mediterráneo Andaluz; i.e., the conservation of the sub-aquatic meadows of Neptune Grass or Mediterranean tapeweed.

Anyway, bloody excellent job done and enhorabuena to all those that gave up their spare time to keep these privileged waters free of litter and rubbish.
