Sand Regeneration for Cotobro

It appears to be a yearly event; Cotobro beach, which gets washed away by spring and autumn gales, is in the process of being topped back up again, with sand grabbed from the Puerta del Mar beach, near the Paseo del Altillo.

More than 200 lorry loads, totaling 2,000 cubic metres of sand & pebbles, will be trucked right around the town, thanks to the one-way system, and deposited on the grateful beach… but not as grateful as Hotel Cotobro, mind.

Councillor Aragón admits that its a temporary fix, pointing out that until a breakwater/groyne is built, the same process will have to be repeated each year, much to the joy of the company that owns the lorries, of course.

Although grabbing sand off one beach to top up another might seem ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul,’ it’s simply returning the sand to where it came from, thanks to Nature’s free-of-charge, sand redistribution system. Whatever the case, it beats the previous method of grabbing dirt and soil from a construction-site or excavation work in town and euphemistically labeling it ‘sand’ before dumping it on the sand-starved beach.
