Salobreña Debt

Well, after the revelations that half the annual budget goes on salaries, and that contrary to election campaign promises the Mayor and the First Councillor haven’t been squeamish about their own personal salaries, it now comes to pass that hitherto uncalculated bills have taken the public debt up to nearly 12m euros.

To give us an idea how much that represents in proportional terms, that’s equivalent to the whole annual budget for Salobreña.

These unpaid bills came up as the Town Hall had just finished going through every outstanding account: the Town Hall owes 11.6m euros, of which 76% (8.8m) corresponds to the company that clears the rubbish and cleans up the town in general, Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas. With this latest revelation, Salobreña takes first place as the most indebted town on the coast, ahead of its much larger neighbour (Motril), which has a population of 60,000 inhabitants, compared to Salobreña with a modest population of 12,000.

As far as the rubbish-collection company goes, they have bills that go back to 2005/2006, which the previous municipal administration just happened to forget to pay – that is a lot of ‘forgetting’ to say the least. However, since the present administration took office, the Town Hall has been regularly paying its ‘cleaning’ bills.

The question is, is anybody going to be taken before a judge for this state of affairs?
