Premature Rejoicing

Somebody has tried setting light to Cerro Gordo, yet again, just when it was thought that the culprit had been caught. This latest fire broke out on the 27th.

Fortunately – and this word should be emphasized – the fire services, with the help of a water-bomber helicopter, were able to control and extinguish the blaze within two hours, despite the strong winds which threatened to spread the fire.

Readers will remember that an ex-Guardia Civil policeman, retired from the service, was arrested as the suspected culprit of nearly a dozen fires on the said wooded hillsides. Shortly after his arrest, he was released pending trial, with the police hoping to find further incriminating evidence against him.

Could this man have been responsible for the latest arson? It’s doubtful as the man was being closely watched by his ex comrades. One thing is for sure, however, sooner or later somebody will ‘successfully’ burn the whole bloody lot down, especially with a dry summer before us.
